Modern Dance in Motion
Modern dance is a genre of dance that originated in the early 20th century as a response to the socioeconomic and political status and as a rejection of Ballet’s rigidity and classical training. Modern Dance aims to comment on and influence social norms, championing freedom of expression, individuality and evolution of style and training.
Using techniques from pioneers, such as Martha Graham, Lester Horton, Mercê Cunningham and José Limón, dynamic athletic movement is used for narrative and storytelling with creative uses of space. Today, Modern Dance is an umbrella term for the many sub styles generated from its inception: Jazz, Contemporary, Lyrical and more.
At Evolution Dance, we offer a full time training program under the AIDT (Association of International Dance Teachers). Using their syllabi for dancers from aged 4 onwards, students can participate in exams, syllabus tests, bursary opportunities and the AIDT’s prestigious ‘Dancer of the Year’ regional and national competitions.
We believe that dance, during early childhood, allows for a greater rate of growth in gross and fine motor skills, numeracy, cognitive and perceptual development as well as social and emotional well being; all whilst establishing a love for the creative arts and freedom of expression through dance.

Meet the Team
Jessica Kitching
Faculty Head Ballet & Modern, Senior Ballet & Modern Instructor
Jessica began her RAD Ballet training at age 3, later expanding into A.I.D.T Modern from age 12. With over 6 years of teaching experience, she has trained dancers from pre-grade to pre-professional level, bringing precision, care, and depth to every class. A qualified A.I.D.T Modern and Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT) teacher, Jessica is passionate about body conditioning, strength training, and anatomy. She helps dancers build safe, strong, and sustainable technique and has received multiple choreography awards at the American Dance Awards and other regional competitions. Beyond the studio, she has worked as a professional dancer with credits including television, stage productions, and commercial campaigns.
